Penis Surgery

Since the early 1970s, surgeons have been performing procedures to repair damaged arteries leading to the penis. The aim of such surgery is to increase blood flow to the penis.

What causes this problem? It can be diabetes, a lifetime of cigarette smoking, injuries to the genital area, or high cholesterol, anything that prevents blood from flowing easily and fully into the penis.

There are several different types of surgical procedures to make these repairs, including arterial bypass surgery, which is very much like heart bypass procedures. The success rate is between 60 and 80 percent. Of course, it is necessary to undergo thorough diagnostic tests in order to find out if you are a candidate for this type of surgery. Most men with ED are not.

You may ask why someone would elect to undergo a surgical procedure when he can simply take a pill. The reasons are that (1) in severe cases of injury or blockage, Viagra may not work; and (2) this surgical procedure may either restore full erectile function or enable the patients to use Viagra or some other treatment successfully to obtain good erections, which would have been impossible without the surgery.
